Self Expression through Plastic Surgery

Each of the billions of people that live on this earth, would like to be unique and distinguished and appreciated as an individual with his/her unique expression. Self expression often makes one feel different and thus more interesting and important than the rest. Self expression is the freedom to say what I feel and am is different and therefore I am who I am and one should respect me for what I am. Self expression often manifests itself in the physical changes, a way that allows others to see that we are different and unique. Common ways in showing self expression are through tattoos, piercings, dying one’s hair a unique color, or wearing clothes different from what is currently in style. Some start new trends and styles. A new trend in the timeless need to feel confident and express oneself is the improvement of their sexual appearance. One cannot be extroverted if self consciousness about ones sexual appearance makes them introverted. Therefore, to express individuality one turns to the art of improving sexual appearance and in some cases genital plastic surgery. While there are many different options available, the most popular surgeries are the labiaplasty, hymenoplasty, vaginaplasty, or a combination of procedures. Some have a buttock lift or abdominoplasty which also enhances the look of the bottom 1/3rd of our body. Each woman is able to give her surgeon her personal goals and expectations of the surgeries and what she hopes to achieve from them, developing a personalized surgery plan. Although these procedures represent the way a woman would like to appear, some people think the idea is absurd, feeling that a woman should accept herself the way she is and shouldn’t need surgery to feel unique. As a form of self expression, however, many women view their surgeries as art and their unique way of showing who they are. In the way that a sculptor takes a mass of clay and molds it into a masterpiece, a surgeon takes a woman’s body and forms it into the perfect body. In that way, a surgeon is an artist, hired by a woman for assistance in creating her as a masterpiece. In a world where tattoos and fluorescent colored hair is acceptable, why shouldn’t beautifying your personal characteristics be?
