Nipple Reconstruction Surgery by Colen MD
Women who are born with inverted nipples or those who lack one or both nipples due to mastectomy, injury or a congenital defect, often feel self-conscious about their breasts. To improve the aesthetics of the breasts, a nipple reconstruction can be performed.
What can I expect with a Nipple Reconstruction?
The technique performed during a Nipple Reconstruction varies depending on the patient and the reason behind the procedure.
The reversal of inverted nipples is a fairly simple procedure and generally does not affect nipple sensitivity. Often done during breast reconstruction surgery, nipple reconstruction is typically the final step of the surgical procedure and can replace a nipple removed due to surgery.
Nipple reconstruction may be performed using one of several techniques, including tissue and cartilage flaps, skin grafts and tattooing.
The most common problem following nipple reconstruction is a decrease in projection, or nipple flattening.
