Many young women come in with great concerns about the assymetry of the labia. If we examine ourselves closely we will see that most our bilateral features are indeed assymetric. Our eye aperture or shape, the corners of out mouth, our cheek bones, the breasts, the size of our feet and on and on. Same is true of the labia. One labia can be much bigger than the other. It may have a different shape-pointy instead of round. One labia may even be bilobed. The crura on one side may be prominent while on the other absent all together. The length of the labia may also differ as well as the color of the mucosa. If the discrepancy is so large as to be very disturbing, one can of course recontour the “offensive” labia to match the side we like. Labiaplasty, is a simple procedure if done well by expert doctors. The sutures used are disolvable and the repair should leave no permanent visible scars. No bandages are needed and rarely one needs pain meds aside from extra strength tylenol. One should refrain from sex for about 4-6 wks depending on the healing. The surgery can be done under local anesthesia if one chooses. So, if one is very distraught with the asymmetry of the labia, one should definitely come for a consultation to see if the surgery will help.
