There are a lot of potential traps to watch out for when scheduling your labiaplasty or vaginaplasty cosmetic surgery. The best way to avoid these traps is to know what questions to ask.  If you don’t get satisfactory answers, this should be a red flag to take your business-and your body–elsewhere.  Let’s take a look at some good questions to ask.

Questions To Ask During the Initial Call

Ask if the doctor is certified, and if so, is his certification through the American Board of Plastic Surgery.  Ask what the surgery fee will be, and will that also cover the cost of the facility, the anesthesiologist and the implant.  Ask what the consultation fee is–and whether or not it’s deducted from the surgery cost.     

Questions to Ask the Surgeon

Ask if you’ll be asleep or awake during the procedure.  Ask about sedation and local anesthesia.  Ask how you can avoid signs of surgery when it’s all finished.  Ask if he ask photos of others who have had the procedure that he has performed.  Ask if it’s possible to speak with someone who has had the same procedure.  Ask if he has privileges for performing the procedure in a local hospital.  Will he be performing in the hospital or at his office?  If it’s his office, ask if it’s accredited for this procedure.  Find out who will pay the extra cost of the procedure takes longer than anticipated.  And finally, find out if you’ll be charged for any follow-up appointments.

Questions to Ask Yourself After Your Appointment with the Surgeon

After you’ve had your first visit with your potential surgeon, it’s time to ask yourself some questions–and give yourself some honest answers.  Was the doctor punctual?  This tells a lot about the doctor’s style.  Did he provide evidence that he’s certified by the APS (American Board of Plastic Surgery)?  Did he explain recovery time and explain the details of post-operative care?  Did he adequately explain all procedures, alternatives and risks involved–and did he do so in language that you understood?

Did the doctor communicate realistic expectations for the procedure?  Did he answer all of your questions fully and candidly?  Do you feel that he listened to your concerns?  Were you comfortable in the doctor’s presence?  It’s very important that the answer to each of the questions in this section is a definitive "yes."  Any negative answers at all could indicate that the doctor is less than stellar in his or her performance–and you should strongly consider looking elsewhere.

Questions to Ask Others Who Have Received the Procedure

If you find someone else who has gotten this procedure from this surgeon, you’re very fortunate.  You now have a reservoir of information at your disposal.  Ask her how she feels about the procedure now that is’ been some months later.  Find out if she was surprised by any unexpected charges.  And ask how she was treated throughout the entire process.
