What is PRP Therapy For Hair Loss?
Hair thining is a problem for many women as they age. Common causes for hair loss include genetics, stress, and in some cases certain medications. Recent advancements in science and technology have led to a relatively new procedure known as PRP Therapy for Hair thining
PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) Therapy for hair thining is a safe and effective procedure performed by Dr. Helen Colen in our Manhattan office. PRP Therapy is a non-surgical therapeutic alternative for hair restoration. The procedure uses a patient’s own blood to trigger and stimulate new hair growth in the scalp. Our blood cells contain specific growth factors that, when extracted by spinning the blood in a special centrifuge, and re-injecting them back into the scalp can assist in hair growth.
How We Perform PRP Therapy for Hair Loss at Colen MD?
The PRP Therapy for hair thinning starts by drawing a patient’s own blood, as if you were having routine blood drawn from your primary care physician’s office. The plasma in the patient’s blood is then extracted by spinning it in a centrifuge. Dr. Helen Colen then re-injects the purified mixture back into the scalp. The purified mixture is injected in one-inch intervals across the top of the scalp in a grid formation to stimulate the hair follicle’s growth. Dr. Helen Colen applies a local anesthetic on the scalp so patients are comfortable during the procedure. The procedure is performed in our Manhattan office and patients can return to their normal routine immediately.
How is PRP Therapy For Hair Loss Different than PRP treatment for skin filling and tightening? How does this PRP treatment differ than the one in conjunction with Fat Grafting?
Some patients might recognize the term “PRP” because PRP Injections have been used in the “Vampire Facelift” in the media. Dr. Colen of ten uses PRP as a filler to enhance the cheeks, chin, teartroph and lips. If more volume is required that she mixes the PRP with fat harvested from the patient own body to enhance the facial appearance. The difference between these two procedures is in the method of injection and volume of injection.
Does PRP Therapy for Hair Loss Work?
PRP therapy has been used for years to help tissue heal and regenerate. As we mentioned before, we’ve also used this same non-surgical technique for patients looking for a natural dermal filler alternative. Clinical trials using PRP Therapy for Hair Loss are not complete and there is no official medical data published at this time that affirms the absolute effectiveness of PRP Therapy for hair loss. That being said, Dr. Helen Colen, who performs the PRP Therapy for Hair Loss in our New York City office, has seen many positive results with patients. It’s also important to note that results can vary from patient to patient.
Am I A Candidate for PRP Therapy for Hair Loss?
PRP Therapy for Hair Loss is an alternative for women who are suffering from hair thinning, but it’s not for everyone. Patients who have lost all of their hair are not candidates for PRP Therapy because the procedure does not help to re-grow new hair on a bald patch. PRP Therapy can, however, help to make existing thinning hair thicker and fuller in appearance. It is more effective in women than in men.
Ideal patients are in relatively good health, non-smokers, and do not drink alcohol in excess.
For more information or to see if you’re a good candidate, we encourage patients to schedule a consultation with Dr. Helen Colen at our New York City office.
