Review: Essential Cosmetic Surgery Companion

A few weeks ago, I told you about an excellent book for women about plastic surgery. Today I want to introduce you to another gem that I’ve discovered, and that I would encourage any of you to pick up. It’s The Essential Cosmetic Surgery Companion, by Dr. Robert Kotler.

At its heart, this is a book for people who don’t speak the plastic surgery lingo. Prospective patients who are confused by all of the media-driven glitz and hype will find this book to be a clear road map. Its primary mission: to help you find the perfect plastic surgeon for your own situation.

I’ve discussed in the past the need to be diligent and careful in selecting your plastic surgeon. This book will help you choose the best doctor as well as the safest and most appropriate procedures. It does so through a series of suggested questions. That is, the book tells you the questions you should ask any plastic surgeon that you’re considering hiring.

Dr. Kotler, as one who has been on the other side of the questioning table, offers you savvy queries that will help you weed out the bad doctors and find the good ones. Specifically, there are seven key questions that you must ask yourself before you contact a cosmetic surgeon,, and then there are various questions you should ask the doctor him or herself.

The book also contains a method for eliminating many bad ones merely through a screening call. Also helpful are several checklists concerning the most popular procedures, surgical facilities and anesthesia. I also like the series of anatomical sketches contained in the book. The idea here is to take the book with you when you visit your plastic surgeon and have him show you on those sketches what he will do and where he will do it.

You might feel a bit awkward taking a book with you to a consultation with a plastic surgeon, but you shouldn’t be. The reputable surgeons encourage you to do your homework before getting anyone to make changes to your body. In fact, taking along a resource such as this will serve to show the doctor that you’re serious about this and you mean business.

The Essential Cosmetic Surgery Companion is available in paperback from most online book retailers, including Amazon.com. Its list price is $19.99, but you can get it for around $14.
