Dermabrasion Helps Improves Facial Scarring
Dermabrasion removes a layer of surface skin to improve the appearance of facial scarring due to acne, chicken pox, injury or other causes, as well as uneven skin pigmentation, wrinkles, sun damage, tattoos, age spots, and certain kinds of skin lesions.
Generally, the face is the most commonly treated with dermabrasion, but skin on other areas of the body may be treated as well.
What to expect from Dermabrasion
In Dermabrasion the skin that will be treated is first frozen, typically with a spray, and then abraded with a high-speed rotary instrument.
The rotary instrument consists of a wire brush or diamond wheel- which takes off the top layer of damaged skin.
When the new skin grows and replaces the previously damaged portion, it creates a smoother, younger, and healthier appearance.
What Can I expect during the recovery?
After the procedure, it is normal to feel a sensation similar to sunburn for a week or so, at which time most patients are then able to return to work. The newly revealed skin will likely appear pinker than usual for two to three months.
Patients should be sure to adequately protect skin from sunlight during this healing process.
