Otoplasty in NYC | FAQs

Otoplasty

Are the size or shape of your ears a thing of concern or embarrassment? Possessing prominent ears is a common condition affecting many people. But the good news is that there’s a pretty simple solution. Otoplasty, or plastic surgery of the ears, is a popular option to correct prominent ears. Colen MD Plastic Surgery proudly offers otoplasty in NYC.

But what are the ins and outs of otoplasty? How exactly is it done? Is it that simple of a solution?

Well, let’s find out. Here are some frequently asked questions about otoplasty in NYC.

Oto-what?

Otoplasty in NYC is the correction of prominent ears by plastic surgery. Prominent ears, also known as protruding ears, is a condition where one’s ears stick out further from the head than normal. Otoplasty is done several ways, from bringing the ears closer to the skull in a process called ear pinning, reducing the size of the ear, or reshaping contours in the cartilage.

Why Consider It?

Prominent ears are common, occurring in roughly 5% of children. It can be a source of great discomfort emotionally. Children with prominent ears often get called unpleasant nicknames. This can leave a permanent impression on the psyche of the child, lasting well into adulthood. This is a reason why a lot of people choose to get the procedure when they are teenagers or younger adults.

How Is It Done?

An otoplasty is performed under a long-lasting local anesthetic. All incisions are made behind the ear itself, leaving no visible scars. After the procedure, a dressing is applied that places pressure over both ears, keeping them in position while they heal.

What To Expect Post Procedure?

There is usually very little post-op pain or bruising. It takes around a week, week and a half, for the swelling to subside. For a period of about three weeks after the procedure, your ears will be a little sensitive, and for a couple of months, your ears will feel a little numb. This is completely normal and is the reason why otoplasty in NYC is a relatively painless procedure.

How About Results?

You will see instant results once the pressure dressing is removed, which is usually after about a week.

Anything Else?

If you have an issue with your ears, that isn’t due to their shape or size; otoplasty can still be an option. For instance, if you have stretched your lobes to a gauge where it’s no longer possible for them to naturally heal, they can be corrected with little time or effort. The same goes with lobes that have been torn by earrings or damaged in other ways.
