Dr. Helen Colen is one of the first women plastic surgeons in this country.
She was trained in general surgery at the University of Colorado and went on to study plastic surgery and eventually microsurgery at NYU in New York. There were very few women to be accepted to the training in surgery in those days-70’s, and so you had to be very smart, very good and skilled to make it. Make it she did. As part of the surgical training, she performed difficult and complicated surgical procedures from transplantation to closing and reconstructing scalp or breast defects after radiation injury, fixing injured nerves especially in the axilla (armpit and face) and reconstruction of internal organs and breasts with microsurgical techniques.
There is nothing she could not do. At the end, she decided to do cosmetic surgery. She believed that the quality of life is as important as prolonging life. She has a keen aesthetic eye and loves creating and reconstructing things- and cosmetic surgery gave her that opportunity. Armed with superb knowledge of anatomy such as nerve locations and blood vessel locations she was able to create the most aesthetically pleasing, breasts, faces, noses, eyes, abdomens and whatever else bothered you. Armed with her surgical skill the only challenge remained was to use those skills in combination with her aesthetic eye to produce superb results. That challenge has pleased her most.
